DANCE ONSCREEN

DANCE ONSCREEN began as a partnership between Branch Collective and the Sudbury Indie Cinema to show locally made dance films and videos. The single screening event has now grown into a festival.

Facilitated by Carly Stasko and Majero Bouman, two members of the team that created the short personal documentary “Dancing in the Doctor’s Office” (Local Commissions Program).

"Tending, Mending, Defending,
The Dance fo Repair Is never ending.
It's all about befriending,
all the places we are alive.
So we can thrive, sustain,
and survive."

- Carly Stasko, 2020

Movement is a resource that builds resilience in the world.

What is the story of you supporting yourself, and what does it look like when you express that through movement and in connection with others?

You don’t have to be a dancer,
You don’t have to be an artist,
You don’t have to be in a good mood,
You can arrive just as you are.
Join this online workshop ready to move to whatever extent you are able.
Have writing paper and pen, as well as something to drink as needed.

We look forward to playing with you soon.

Carly and Majero have been exploring creative embodiment in community for 5 years, both online and in person and are pleased to have discovered many ways to create safe, restorative and inspiring experiences for participants.

The Animal Inside - Create a dance film with Leigh Lugosi
Sunday, November 20th, 2022 9:30am-11:30am
Studio open at 9am for folks to come and settle in
Sudbury School of Dance (165 Pine St)
FREE! No registration required

In this experimental workshop, filmmaker, musician, and mover Leigh Lugosi opens up a space for creativity and collaboration to dancers and movers of all disciplines ages 16+. Participants will be welcomed to free themselves from their inhibitions and embrace the animal within. Leigh will lead participants through movement with the goal of exploring our primary instincts and releasing expectations of beauty or being "good at dancing". Next, the group will work in collaboration, moving, dancing, exploring, and interacting while Leigh films and directs the group with suggestions. This workshop is ultimately a guided improvisation that will culminate in the creation of a fully improvised dance film set to a soundtrack curated by Leigh.

Community Events

Inside of all projects led by Branch Collective, we work to integrate time and space for people to simply BE TOGETHER. We believe that gathering together to experience art, to enjoy treats, and to share in conversation, forms strong connections which serve as the basis of our community. Coming up we have three moments in time where you can connect with other community members during DANCE ONSCREEN. These events are open to everyone as we believe community is not just the artists creating work, but also our friends and family members, art administrators, art supporters, and audience members.

Festival Launch Party

Graciously, KUPPAJOE is welcoming Branch Collective to hold space at the cafe for folks to gather for a coffee, tea, and conversation. Here again, we aim to create a porous and open space for folks to come and go as they would like with the intention of creating a space for connection. All are welcome.
